The top reason for early hip revision surgery is prosthetic joint infection, at 32.1%. This is followed by peri-prosthetic fracture (14.1%), instability (13.2%) and aseptic loosening (11.1%).

The top reason for early knee revision surgery is also prosthetic joint infection, at 33.8%. This is followed by instability (14.9%), other complications (12.6%) and aseptic loosening (9.8%).

The average cost of a hospital stay for a primary hip replacement surgery is $10,031; the average cost increases to $23,125 for an early hip revision due to prosthetic joint infection. The average cost of a hip revision due to other reasons is $15,647.

The average cost of a hospital stay for a primary knee replacement surgery is $9,184; the average cost increases to $17,999 for an early knee revision due to prosthetic joint infection. The average cost of a knee revision due to other reasons is $12,973.
