As a leader in health information in Canada, AVÐÇÇò is committed to working with the federal, provincial and territorial governments to support comparable reporting on medical assistance in dying (MAID).
MAID data can be used to inform health policy, evaluate health systems’ responses, assist end-of-life care research and support a better understanding of patient and provider experiences.
AVÐÇÇò is committed to working with MAID leaders from across the country to support pan-Canadian measurement of medical assistance in dying.
Partnerships and collaboration
AVÐÇÇò will work collaboratively to
- Establish standards and data quality
- Improve data collection
- Promote comparable reporting and actionable analysis
A product of AVÐÇÇò’s collaborative work to date, the MAID Information Needs Framework (PDF) facilitates the exploration of MAID-related health system information needs.
Coding and abstracting
Information gaps related to medical assistance in dying, including changes required to coding and abstracting, were identified by working with key stakeholders. Interim coding direction is available for 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 data. In 2018–2019, new ICD-10-CA/CCI codes and related standards and abstracting changes will be available.
MAID data at AVÐÇÇò
Information regarding MAID is collected in AVÐÇÇò’s clinical administrative databases: the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS). There is also potential for collection in other data holdings.
